So, I went out to check on my chickens today, and I found an egg I missed yesterday from my EE Taylor. I am attaching a picture of it.

I’m pretty sure those white spots are calcium deposits. I have a simple question. How do these usually form, and how do I fix it? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

This may have been a one time thing, though. I found the egg she layed today and there are no calcium deposits on it.

Simply put, can someone please educate me on calcium deposits?

By the way, this is Taylor, in case anyone is interested.

Look at the sandpaper and pimple sections of the egg quality guide. Don't get too excited about possible causes. This guide is written more for commercial operations than us so they go into real depth.

For the vast majority of us it is either a defect in the shell gland or how the individual hen's body processes the calcium she eats. You can see what they say and maybe try to "fix" it, but I totally agree with Aart. There is no reason to fix it. It does not hurt the hen and it does not affect the quality of the egg. They are totally safe to eat.

If it bothers you (it does not bother me and many of my eggs have that to some degree) do not hatch her eggs. It could be hereditary. Other than that just enjoy those great eggs.
