CALIFORNIA in January?

I went to school in Humboldt county and did stream surveys. Also lived in the Bay Area, Shasta County in NE California, and fished and hunted everywhere north of Stockton for almost 30 years. For me, even in the dead of winter, a heavy coat is too much, unless you are going to be in the Sierra for a long time, especially if you are short on space. If you have the space, a second heavy fleece pullover that still fits under your raingear would be better than a heavy coat.

If you are slightly warm blooded, the normal layers of fleece and a good wind shell would suffice. It is not like Idaho or Montana in January, and in fact on the coast you can have some beautiful days in January.

Breathable raingear of quality is nice, but it sounds like you've spent plenty of time in the rain already. On the coast in winter, moisture is usually your worst enemy before cold.

Good luck.

Pete
