Hi y’all,
I️ have a pair of California quail that will be moved into an aviary soon. I️ was wondering if they will mate and hatch eggs or if that’s only something they will do in the wild. The male is extremely tame and super friendly. I recently bought my hen from a breed and she is about as wild as can be. I’m not sure that matters or not.

Thank you!

Nothing is impossible. Although, if you are wanting some baby chicks from them then you may want to look more into getting an incubator or using a friends to hatch some out yourself.

Ok but will she only lay eggs if she intends to sit or will lay no matter what?

Hard to say. She may just lay them and never sit on them. Although if she is laying them with the intentions of sitting on them then she is likely to lay more eggs if you continue to take them vs if you don't cause then she will just lay a clutch of eggs and stop laying and start sitting on them to attempt to hatch them. I am no expert on California Valley Quail. I raised around 15 and hatched there eggs for around 2 years before giving them away and that has been 5 years or so ago. Beautiful birds but they are much different then Bobwhites or Coturnix. They never laid nearly as many eggs as I recall.
