What gender are these California quails?

The chicks are too young to tell. In another two months or so, the male, if there is one, will have black and white develop on his head. Both genders will have the crest.

Not really. Is that a rubber band on the leg in the second photo?

No they don’t have a plume when they’re born. Both boys and girls have a little area of feathers,and when they become excited, it raises. But won’t develop into a plume for another few weeks though.

No it’s a plaster to fix the chicks splayed leg and ahhh I see what weeks do i get to see their plumes
