California Quail

Thats what his website has on it... looks like you will have to find them elsewhere!

Here they are on Lake Cumberland game bird's website They are HIGH and you cant get anyone on the phone.. but most say if you order online, you get your eggs!

That sucks.
Thats today tho, Id call right now and see if he wants to part with any stock, sounds like he wont be having the time to care for anything . . .
Wouldnt hurt to try, his # is there . . .

i have california quail in our orchard and i see the 'herd' (i call it that cos there are very many of them) and they are large feeding off the fallen fruit.

i would raid a nest or catch them if i could, but have no clue where thy hide.

i caught a grouse at the chicken coop last fall and it would hang around alot.

i would prefer this variety because they are already used to the weather here i would use them for eggs and later meat (5 years from now)

Everything stated above is illegal in Ca, and prolly shouldnt even be posting ideas like that.
I found out this BEFORE I learned the hard way . . .

Its called a "covey"

What state are you in, I assume Washington?
I dont think its legal up there either, but youd have to check the laws thru your state Fish n Game agency.

Read this page . . .

weird. my bf has been collecting dead animals from the side of the road for his biology class. never knew it could be illegal.

the specimens are getting worn out. the birds are mounted on a stick while raccons are skinned.

just saying cos my neighbor had phesants and turkey vulture and let them loose. the vultures are useful cos they munch on the dead deer on the side of the highway and many many years ago there used to be wild phesants here. now they are again.

i like the quail i would let some loose in our orchard. they eat all the fallen fruit which is good cos pests like to go dormant in them in the winter.

its not like i would be bringing mute swans or muscovies, non native illegal birds.

Not a dumb question at all, that is how you find out things.
I was also confused about this.

The general answer is a few points . . .
1 you are buying them, there is a paper trail . . .
2 none of those are natives. . .
3 most places, if you buy an animal for food you have a grace period(in Ca you cant keep em more than 30 days)

Granted, if you arent advertising them for sale, you prolly wont get caught . . .
But thats a stupid fine if you do.

My theory is(in Ca) why not pay the $18.50 and be legit and have no worries . . .
Also, FnG provides a valuable and needed service, they are also the 1st agency to be hit with spending cuts and no state FnG ever has enough money.
I know it sucks to get a ticket for something stupid like fishing with a barbed hook, but the good outweighs the bad of FnG(IMO), so why not give them their permit fee and be legal?

I am a fisherman, a hunter, and an all-around animal enthusiast, and I very much appreciate that at least 1 govt agency is trying to make sure that my kids will be able to enjoy the outdoors/wildlife as much as I do.
