Hello everyone,
Need some advice and maybe a little help.
We had 5 quails, one of them couldn't warm up and passed on Saturday, very sad day but the Wednesday before in the morning we descovered peep 2 understandably nicknamed HOUDINI escaped the pen, that night I heard a single and loud cry, we thought it had passed but the neighbours at the bottom of the garden said they rescued it from a cat but escaped and 2 more times after, any advice how to catch this very clever quail???
Any help would be amazing

Can you use the other quail to lure him in? Put them out in a secure cage within a bigger pen with a doorway left open so you can try and shut him in when he comes to find the others. I had a Japanese quail male flush on me and go sailing over the fence into the neighbours. It was late, I was busy, he was one of many spare males and I figured he'd be cat food. But 3 or 4 days later I walked outside to find him sitting in the backyard. He was hungry but unharmed. Hopefully you'll get your Houdini back!

Sadly the other quails are just on the other side of the fence and this didn't work, like I said it has earned it's name, besides it won't go hungry, it's eating the chickens feed, thankyou for your response, it has eased my mind a little, unfortunately on that side of the fence is where the cats are

If the escaped bird knows where to get water and is able to escape predators, it'll be fine. When it's wings are long enough, it'll fly back provided that the ones you still have can call it back. As for advice on catching the quail back, do it at night time when it can't see you.

I raise a lot of Valley's. I've had a few get out now and again and I've come to the conclusion that its VERY hard to capture them. I usually just consider it a lost. However, they to tend to stick around for a while. Just like what Ntsees said in her post, the best time to catch them is to stalk and see where it roosts for the night and try to catch it after it gets dark. I usually go out at 2am to catch my adults for my clients. I found out that its better to catch them early in the AM.
