Hi Moochie! I have a cat with that name who looks like your avatar.

JerseyGiantfolk, those are good weights for Dorkings. Do you have pics? Where are they from?

Kim

Does anyone on this thread breed Black Jersey Giants SOP preferred? I have a friend in the SF Bay area who is looking to add to her small flock. She is looking for hatching eggs or POL/laying hens. Thank you!

Well they are not show quality, I know, the color is wrong on the hen, and the rooster... well, you tell me, he isn't a good one

But they do have 5 toes!

This is them when they were younger half a year to a year.

Show quality Dorkings are scarce these days.

Those are great weights, though and they are pretty. Where did you get them?

Sand Hill Preservation. I ordered 6 of them: 3 Silver and 3 Red, but all the Silvers were cockerels, and attacked the other chicks, so turned into pot pie. There were 2 cockerels for the reds and just 1 red pullet. My sister showed 1 of the red cockerels and the red pullet at a fair, the pullet got 3rd in a class of 6. I forgot what the cockerel got, but he did get placed in a class of 5.

Then that red Dorking who was showed turned super mean. This big hunk of meat would chase you down or jump up and peck your leg. He bit my mom and she had this beak looking bruise on her hand for a week. So he was given to our neighbors to be turned into enchiladas.

Do you breed your Dorkings? I'd love to see your silvers.

I have some from Sand Hill and they are not the best. Introducing them goofed up the color in my flock. I've heard about Reds being especially nasty. All but one of my Silvers have been very mellow birds.

Wow, I keep hearing about Dorkings being shown and winning in the Northwest. That's great! I've never even seen a Dorking in a show around here. I did put two in the show at the Heirloom Expo, but that was just so people could see a Dorking. It's going to be a long time before I have exhibition quality Dorks. They are a work in progress.

I've had SGDs since 2005, but made all the rookie mistakes. I'm trying to be a better breeder now, paying attention to the SOP. I'm just going to concentrate on improving type & size before anything else, at this point. All my adult Silvers are here: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjy9U63M and http://flic.kr/s/aHsjyaFxF6

Here are some pics that I took, a couple days ago:

Yours look better than the ones you had me look at a week ago.

OK I mentioned I had some EEs and OEs hatched out, but I also have some of the Lavender eggs hatch and like I said before I didn't mark them this last 3 times. If anyone is interested, let me know. You'll have to pick up here, because although I'll be going to the Bay Area this week I'll have a caar load and camping equipment, so no room for chicks. I'm going to be listing them on CL also I think and might as well list them on BYC as well. But first, bck to work on my home projects. Going to be 90 today and no AC, so we'll see how long I last.
