California White

I just ordered from Ideal 6 California Whites ((& a few others))

Any way I read they were easy to handle much calmer than the Leghorn!!!

Does anyone out there have them
(or the Ideal 236 because it says they can be substituted)
also what is the mix (the CA is Barred Rock/Leghorn (is that write?)


What is the temperment & how often do they lay?

I have two - ordered CA whites and got Ideal 236 I believe.

Not laying yet, they're too young still. I can't tell the two apart - they have names but I don't know who is who!

They're pretty calm, don't particularly like being held - my EE's and my Buff O's are easier to hold etc...

I have white leghorns, brown leghorns and 236 leghorns. I can tell them apart but they are all hyper.
They lay every day and my heavy breeds hens (RIR and buff) are calm
Let me know about the CA-leghorns.
I ordered two but received the 236.

cali whites i think are just a strain of leghorn. Mix of leghorn and cali grey I believe. I had one... looked and acted just like a leghorn, bar the few black feathers...

I have what I have always thought to be Cali Grays. They are flighty, and do not like to be held or even touched.
I got them when I ordered a white layer package.
I thought they had meesed up and sent me BRs until they started laying white eggs.

I will let you know on the CA White (being shipped 11/27) I read this at Welphatchery.com about them -

"California White Chicken - Baby: light yellow with black flecks. Mature: white with black flecking. Very quiet bird, easy to handle and can take the cold very well. Excellent layer for small and medium sized flock. Lays a white egg.
Weight: 4.5 lbs."

Ideal says they are black sexlink & Leghorn ((I am thinking the black sexlink makes them calmer))

I think you might have Exchequer Leghorns (depending on were you got them from) they look barred!

I have been trying to read up any chickens that lay more and eat less!

I have found different hatchery use different chickens to make CA Whites or sexlinks!

because I am trying not to go for straight Leghorn!
