Now that I’m overthinking whether my maybe-barred-rock is a roo I’m wondering if the other two might also be. My neighbor just told me that comb growth can be an early indicator of gender. The two white chicks in this picture are California whites. Their combs are very yellow still but largish, especially the one on the right. Can you tell based on the comb? Hoping this is just a breed thing, I know the adults tend to have pretty large combs. They are five weeks.

At five weeks old, they do all look like little cockerels to me. I have a CA White. I'll see if I can find some pictures of her as a chick to compare...

Ugh I thought maybe it would be okay to have one rooster but we can't have three. My poor daughter loves these chickens I don't know what I'm going to tell her if we can't keep them ... 🙁

My CA White. I don't know how old she is there, but it is older than 5 weeks and the comb is still very tiny.

I did see some pictures of 5-week old leghorn cross pullets who had combs the size of my two, so I'm holding out hope. Both whites have pretty dainty legs and look a lot like your photo except for the larger combs.

I hope they turn out to be pullets! Keep us updated.

What did you end up having?
