I am going to go to the feed store tomorrow and there is a good chance I will be able to get some California white pullets-

My current 6 ladies are only giving me about 2 eggs a day- not enough for us, and I have read that California whites are not terribly flighty like purebred leghorns and egg laying machines who will probably provide us with eggs year round...

What do you think? Should I pick up 3 or 4 more girls for my backyard flock? I am leaning towards it. I am thinking my (probable) American Game mixes are not producing well at the moment, and there is a good chance they will stop laying during winter...

What is the pet quality of California Whites? My girls are producers AND pets, so I like to hear about the personality traits of any particular breed...

Thanks everybody!

(Just wanted to add that I LOVE this forum, it's SO nice to be at a place where I can ask about chicken personalities and not get laughed out the door).

Well, did you get them?

I always think you should get 3 or 4 more.

I have no experience with CA whites - when I had a choice between them and Delawares, I picked the Dels.

I may later today...

I will post something if I do.

For some reason I am only getting about 2 eggs a day-if I want a few eggs a day year round, I think I may need to get some.

Right now I'm sitting outside having to listen to my black star scold me because I didn't bring her more Cheerios!!!!!!

Well, they were out of California Whites...I was surprised, as they had a ton of them last time. They DID have 2 EEs, but they both have terrible underbites-their bottom beaks grew in sideways. I wasn't going to get them, but they were only a couple of bucks a piece and I figured they would have a good of chance in my large sideyard as any with all the dirt they can try to dig those poor beaks into.

They are in the large parrot cage now, with a couple of deep bowls of food they can hopefully get at. We will see how it goes. I will be surprised if the lighter of the two makes it...
