Might of posted this in the wrong forum so I’ll ask here as well!
Does anyone have any advice on whether to keep Call Ducks in pairs or a one male with several females ratio? I’ve been keeping call ducks for years and I’ve tried a few different ways, but each creates unique problems.
When I have pairs, the males fight constantly. When I’ve had one male and a bunch of females, he tends to have a favourite (it’s always a white female I’m not sure why!) and the others seem to be left out, they don’t seem to be too upset but the females seem to squabble amongst themselves.
I keep them as pets, so I’m very invested in their emotional well being 😅 and it’s so distressing to see them bully each other. Sometimes I’ve had a pair that’s completely content and sometimes they’ll be a male who will fight for all the females and mess things up. I can never seem to get them all happy!

Also is this level of pickiness unique to call ducks? When I talk to people who have other breeds they seem to not have this sort of problem.

Any advice?

Generally, Calls can be kept in pairs fine better than most heavyweight breeds, but the pair will have to kept separate from other ducks, you cant have three pairs all living together, or some over mating and fighting between the males is going to be expected. Some males will pick there favorite, I've found this to be more common with bantam breeds, they seem to retain much of there wild ancestors instincts who will pick only one mate a year, they are in my opinion a little pickier when choosing a mate.

If you keep them all together, I would say around one drake per five females would be good, fighting will be a given in springtime no matter what, just try to reduce it by keeping a healthy ratio.

Thank you so much! This is so helpful 😲 good to know it’s not just mine in particular that are picky!
