Just went out to let the ducks out. My call squeegee has been building a nest in my shed and I saw that she had layed a new egg. I picked it up and this thing is giant compared to the eggs she normally lays. Poor little Squeegee, she’s also the smallest call. I noticed there was some blood on the egg too. I had noticed yesterday that she was acting kind of off and standing in one spot and now I know why. Should I be concerned? She is acting like herself today, and running around with the other calls.

I think its pretty normal for ducks to lay double-yolk eggs every once and awhile. Its like a human having twins. I haven't personally experienced it yet, but I see people posting in the "How many eggs did you get today" thread pretty often saying they got big double-yolkers.

Thanks for the reply. Yes my Pekin Crazy lays large double yolk eggs often. I was just worried because of the blood, and how she was acting off yesterday. Plus she is very tiny. Here’s a picture of her. I also notice that she’s not partaking in flying with the other calls today.

Blood on the shell can signify rupturing of the vessels of the reproductive tract or can indicate inflammation of the tract. With a bird that just started laying, it not uncommon to get abnormally large eggs; some of which can cause some of the blood your seeing. I have personally seen blood on eggs, and as so long as it doesn't continue daily, and it's a small amount, I tend to leave the bird be as it usually resolves itself.

Thanks for the reply! She started laying around July of last year. I will monitor her closely and let you know how she does. :)

You're welcome - even if they have laid an egg before, once they start after that fall/winter lull you still often get abnormal eggs.

Didn't realize that type of mark on the egg indicated blood. Got one like that last week.
