Other than being totally cute, do they have any of the typical farm uses such as eggs. My DD wants one sooo bad, but I told her that for now we are only getting animals that give something back to the farm, such as eggs, meat, milk, ect. I told her I would ask all the duck people at BYC. Even if they were known to be really broodie, I might, might, consider it.

Thanks in advance.

I have not found any use in Call ducks other than cute. They are loud if you need more noise on the farm. They are not broodie and do not lay very many eggs. But, are very cute!!

Pets & show. They were bred to lure [call] wild ducks for hunters in England-guess that's why they're so noisey. Some strains lay better than others but none are very productive layers.

AWWWW...come on mom...they dont eat much! And your daughter can tame them down really well.. great size for kids, wont get tore up or bit like some larger breed ducks...I see an opportunity to teach her responsibility and that although animals are essentail for food and other goods, they also make great pets! to have just because you want to enjoy them..And if they dont work out, im 100% certain that you will have NO trouble rehoming them! Let her know that im rootin for her!

ps...
they would be ok for 4H too.. small and easy for her to handle all by herself..But honestly, the cuteness factor alone should win your heart;)

Wellll....I just made the mistake of reading that post outloud. Now my other DD (4) is running around the house going "Awww, come on mom!" LOL. She now knows you are in her corner, and thanks you. She's 6. DH is like doing a repetitive bird count while rolling his eyes in his head... I think he is going to pass out soon. I have that small, rumbling sound in my head, you know the sound right before the wall starts to go and you cave.........NOOOOOO!!!

So, if, IF, I were to search for a call duck, should I get one from a private breeder, or a hatchery, given that it would have to be justified as a 4-h thing?
