I was wondering if there is anything I can do for this littel guy? He was born with his leg jutting straight behind him. He has never stood just propells self on his stomach like he is swimming. Anatomically he has the knee joint and the hip appears fine. I have tryed using vet wrap and wrapping the leg into position but it does not stay on for very long with his scooting around. He eats, drinks (vit water for fowl). I am concerned that if left in this position too long there will be contratures and it will never be functional. He cannot survive this way. His name is Mikey. Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated. He is home grown and hatched by himself. He is three days old.

i have hatched a few like that this year.
i had 1 recover and the rest have passed away after a few days.
im not sure how to fix it.
i wish i could be of more help on this

Did you try anything to correct the legs? How long did the one take to recover?

It could be a Niacin defiency

i tried using banaide splints.. that didnt work.
while still in the incubator i put them in small cups so they were forced to put their legs under them.
altho once strong enough to push the cups over i let them scoot around.
the one that recovered did so on her own. and i did not expect her to 1 bit.

i still havent figured out what causes it either.
some hatches i have 1-3 ducklings with a bad leg. and other hatches i have none.

You are correct it could be Niacin def. But the are currently getting water with Vit. in it with niacin and have been since birth. I think I am going to go back to some vet wrap and put the leg into correct positioning and bind it to him. It will not hurt to try for I feel if I do nothing his future is very bleek.

Did you ever get this little guy to recover? And how I currently have a pekin duckling with this problem. Any sugestions?

This is an old post and you may not get an answer from the last op but Pekins seem to have leg issues and from all we have read Niacin or Brewers yeast added to water or food helps alot. Is it spraddle leg? or something else?

No its not spraddle leg. this is just like the posters picture just one leg. I've got it tied up against the body right now to see if keeping it in that position will help. Other wise I dont know what to do. It would be suvirly handycaped and probible not be able to be with any other flock members, may not even be able to walk. but hopeful that tieing it in place might help.
