Thanks alot, Fowlweather! Now I feel much better!!!

Ok - so I ordered 10 Cuckoo Marans eggs and got 12, I got 7 eggs from my neighbor (don't know the breed, but the hens lay huge brown eggs and the roo is a long-tail), and I have 2 of my own Ameraucana eggs that I would love to hatch. The problem is, I only have 1 broody!!!! She is an Australorp, so she's not huge. I guess I will have to get rid of the Ameraucanas and maybe a few of the ones I got from my neighbor. I wonder how many I can cram under little miss Aurora?. . . .

Oh, and there's no way I can start my bator up right now - we're packing on our horses into the mountains on the 13th, so I won't be here to watch them like a hawk!!!

My name is Lori and I am a chickenaholic!!!!!

Hi Lori,

I am not sure what size an Australorp is, but my gamebird sat a clutch of 20. 19 hatched-one infertile. Yes, I was very uneducated-I thought if the girls laid em then the broody could set on that many lol!

She is not a very big bird at all and did an excellent job covering all 20. You may want to give it a go and see how many yours will cover.

Best wishes!

I just may do that. I'd like to get as many chicks going right now as I can so that they will be all feathered out for winter. Hopefully we'll actually have some rain and snowpack this time!!

I'm going out to work one of my horses. If you don't hear from me for more than a few days, you can assume I died from the heat (it's 110 degrees here right now!!)

Lori
