calling all goat owners!!

Hmmm...

I got my first chicks when I was four. 1 BR & 1 RIR. My parents said they got them for me so that I may learn to become more responsible

. My parents made me give the chicks away at about three weeks. I ended up getting more chicks, and we eventually built a chicken coop.

My parents are not respnsible fro my chickens what so ever. Heck! I don't even let them feed them. I'm afraid they might hurt them.

I keep my chicken's coop clean, and they never have to ask me to feed them so asking them for goats was kind of easy. First, I show an ample intrest in goats by reading books on them. Then every once in a while, I'll tell them what I've learned about goats. Then, when I present the question to them, I state all the reasons why I should have them, how they benefit us, etc. Give them time to think about it, do not show anxiety. That will not help. Be as polite as possible, and be extra kind to your parents while they think about it (It took a couple weeks for me

they can normally tell when i get an idea...i normally end up cleaning up the entire house for days upon days! my mom is constantly telling me that she is amazed at how responsible i am with my ducks. they are super afraid of me, but i go out there and sit with them anyways just to be around them. hopefully i'll get a yes. time for a trip to get goat books and start looking into 4h!!

and chirpy-of course! we can trade. send your kids to my parents, they keep hoping i'll "grow out" of animals. yeah, not gonna happen. lol!

Maybe you can find a breeder who will let you keep/show a couple of their goats this summer... That might be a good way to show your parents that you are really into it, and to get some experience before you get your own goats.

It would also give you a chance to learn about bloodlines, etc. so you can start with some good goats for showing.

Now - I still say I got my goats to teach me to be responsible. It's 7:00 here and I must go out and milk the goat! See, it works!!

Good luck!

yep! i get up early to let the ducks out, turn the eggs, and clean the pen when i can. and every night i go out, no matter what, to put them to bed. in the winter, i would go out around 5+ times a day even if it was a blizzard to make sure they were okay. goats would be so much fun! theres a farm nearby with a ton of pygmies. i'll have to stop by sometime.

you can show your ducks in 4-H too...

Lets see, I'm Dairy Goat Grand Champion, one of the top 5 poultry showwomen (I would say showgirl, but...)in the state, I haven't shown my rabbit 4-H yet, and I am dead last of all the sheep showmen in the county. Hey, ya win some, ya lose some.
4-H ROCKS! I'm pushing to take my goats to state. 4-H is amazing and I wish I had started in 4th grade, the minimum age, so that I could do it even more!
Sorry, that was a brag-a-thon. Anyway, pygmies are cute, but kind of useless. If you want to convince your parents that they can be useful and may actually save you money, I would get Nigerian Dwarfs and milk them. They have the same look, except their eyes can be the most beautiful blue color...In our county, the goat's bloodlines don't matter at all, as any goat can be a good milker, and any goat can be a bad one. They just look for a nice round escutcheon, firm udder attachments, sound hooves that are well clipped, etc. My mom always starts getting into the animals I get into, and I think she sometimes wishes she could do showmanship!
GOOD LUCK! I expect to see you on this part of the forum a lot, showing off pics of your new goats!

i hope so! it took forever to get the ducks but now my parents LOVE them. they think they are hilarious and adorable. but they aren't really show quality, and they don't like people....they are okay with me, but no closer than 2 ft and no touching. those are their rules. our ducks are kinda useless too! they refuse to eat their eggs because they say its gross. same thing that comes out of the chickens but in those horrible factories! wait, better than that. so i wouldn't mind if the goats were useless. compared to dogs, what size would a pygmy be and what size would a nigerian be? like what breed if they about the same size...i'm real good at dog sizes, still learning the goats.

I dont breed Nigis but from my understanding ... the biggest maybe Labrador size at maturity?

I could be way off there

i don't want to breed them or anything. i was actually looking to see if i could get two wethers. just want some more pets! hey, maybe soon i can open up a zoo and have schools come and visit and make tons of money! lol!!

oh and i forgot...nigerian dwarfs, not just nigerians, my laziness got the best of me again! i want the little guys.

I don't have any pets. All my animals have to work for they're food. The only reason my chickens are getting food is because they give us eggs. The only reason My budgies have food is because they produce wonderful chicks that are worth $$$. To me, thats what a hobby farm is. I won't get any goats that do not produce milk, that will waste my money! NO MILK NO FOOD! LOL (jk) But yes, wasting money is the last thing on my mind...

That was just an FYI on how I do things.
