I am a chicken lover and a herbalist. I think us herbalist should share medical herb recipes like salves, tincture, and more. I will start this off with this recipe from one of the wonderful Rosemary Gladstar's books.

Lemon Balm Bath

Put herb mixture in the bath and it is like "soaking in a big cup of tea"

2 parts fresh or dried lemon balm leaf

1 part chamomile flower

1 part lavender bud

1 part rose petal

To prepare the bath:
Put all the herbs in a large cloth bag or even a nylon stocking and fasten it to the faucet of the tub. Let hot water run through the herb bag.

To use:
Soak in your herb scented bath for 30 min. Use the bag of herbs as a wash cloth to massage your body with.

So any recipes you would like to share?????

I made a salve from comfrey and calendula I have growing in my garden that works wonders for small cuts, etc.

I put the comfrey in a blender with as small an amount of olive oil as I could get by with and blended as fine as I could get it. Then I put the comfrey/oil mix in a double boiler for about 4 hours. You really have to keep that bottom part checked as the water could simmer out. Then I strained the comfrey out by pouring it through a fine sieve.

Then I did the same with the calendula petals.

I mixed the two oils together than added a bit of beeswax. If it cooled off and was too thin, I just gently heated it up in a double boiler again and added a bit more. You want to heat it gently. It can be done in a microwave but I think that is too harsh and hot and you might end up with less of the good stuff in there.

Been keeping this in a jar for months now and it hasn't gone bad out on the countertop. When I have a cut or something that doesn't want to heal up quickly, this stuff works great!

Caveat .... I only dabble. However, lemon balm is a very gentle "tranquilizer" and it is supposedly excellent for the nerves. I believe it also tightens pores and revitalizes the skin.

I am not an herbalist, but I like the thought of using herbs and plants any day over using store bought medicines.

I am commenting, just so I can have this thread to check up on.

Purple Coneflower has a natural antibiotic property so I'll be experimenting with that next. I only have one plant to use currently but I'm saving seed from it.

Here is the extent of my herbal wisdon - if you get itchy, burny from stinging nettle - there is usually some Jewel Weed growing nearby. The sap from the jewel weed will take care of the irritation from the nettles.

I know nettles have some healing/health use, but right now I can't think of what it is.

Anyone have any suggestions on a GOOD, comprehensive book on home remedies with herbs?

I use nettles in a tea with cayenne, plantain, thyme and honey for colds and flu
