Calling all veterans and family members. Allies too.

Hey Marlinchaser,

Fellow Submariner here. 8 years in USN. Served aboard USS Dallas SSN700.
My father served in USAF Reserves during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
And, I recently found out that my Great, Great, Great Grandfather served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Many thanks to all the Vets who've gone before us to secure our freedoms. And, many thanks to those who serve today and continue to protect us. I'm so proud of you all.

Todd

I am not a veteran, and only my uncle in my direct family has served (US Army in the 50s).

Despite this, much of my adult life has been around mil and I am very close to the services. Private sector I've been to many bases/air stations etc to post as we make products for the military. Personally, I was set to join the USCG Reserve in my early 20s when I tore my ACL and could not get a waiver despite trying several times over the next few years. It's too bad on many levels, but instead I volunteered w/the USCG as an auxiliarist from 1997 to 2002, where I worked alongside active duty at ISC Boston, shipboard on an ATON cutter, and at a small boat station. I have particularly strong memories of an assignment at STA Bos Light over a week of the 4th of July, and as part of the unified command center for Boston Harbor security immediately following 9/11.

Thank you to all who have served or are in the military now.

[PS as a minor point, the USCG "belonged" to the DOT before the DHS - but isn't under the DoD/Navy unless by formal transfer because the USCG performs domestic law enforcement. Yeah other branches do too but just not among US civilians

Since he just came home from the-middle east he said that every airport that he and his buddies came Thu clapped and said thanx except for Denver. Sad when Denver has so much around them that is military.

TO ALL WHO HAS SERVED, PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE, MY GREATEST THANKS AND GOD BLESS EVERY ONE OF YOU. we love you

most definitely a uniformed, military service but exempt from the Posse Comitatus act (but even the line for what the DoD can perform seems blurry to me). anyway, whole 'nother ball of wax...

The Coast Guard's roots lie in the Revenue Cutter Service, which was founded on August 4, 1790 as part of the Department of the Treasury. An act of the U.S. Congress created the Coast Guard in 1915, with the merger of the Revenue Cutter Service and the United States Lifesaving Service. The United States Lighthouse Service was merged into the Coast Guard in 1939. The legal basis for the Coast Guard is Title 14 of the United States Code, which states: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times." Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy. The Coast Guard later moved to the Department of Transportation in 1967, and on February 25, 2003 it became part of the Department of Homeland Security.

That's what I'm talking about. Thank you everyone.

Interesting it has its roots in the Department of Treasury. Side note, isn't the Secret Service part of Treasury?

My Dad was SAC (Air Force) in Columbus, Ohio in 1958 honerable discharge.
Nephew is in the Air Force, Staff Sgt, Bomb loaders. He was with the U1's, now going to be with the fighter units on the west coast.
My nephew has worked hard from 9/11, gone over seas in the big "sandbox" 3 times, just came home from Korea.

Our men and woman

I'm very proud of all the men and women,
that wear the uniform, creased and spit shined

My heart goes out to those that are waiting
for the word, to hear that reassuring voice
that says "I love you"
Because we will never know what its like
to live each day in hell
wondering if our world is going to fall.

For those men and women that wake in the night
sweating and crying out
The fantom pain; in their bodies and minds.

Proud of the wives and husbands that wait
holding together for their children
waiting for a single word that their life is still there.

Going back can never happen
going forward is what we have to do.
God bless you in a country
where people don't stand to honor you.

For those that lost thier lives
those wounded souls that finally did get to rest
The ones that were and are shunned
when they came home
For those that feel the shame to be
called a hero, seeing what they have,
they were told "this is your job", "your orders"

Thank you, Thank you , Thank you
from the bottom of my heart
You gave us the freedom to be here
in the world being next to you.

When you see a uniform,
never speak bad about any branch!
Instead stand tall, take off your hat!
place your right hand over your heart
Shake their hands, smile big
as these are the pegs and glue
that have given us our rights
to call this land free!
