Well, we have a new baby chick! The mama, Flash, a bantam EE, was so compulsively broody, I was unable to break her. Finally gave her ONE egg. An egg from the big flock. Today is day 20 and it hatched!
This baby is 3/4 Spitzhauben, 1/4 Sebright. The EE's are a separate flock, now only 3 of them, 2 hens and a rooster. Well they aren't quite a year old, but almost. I decided to see if it will work out for mama to raise the baby in this flock. We shall see. IMG_7525.jpeg
I gave them wet mash, that's what she has all all over her beak...

So this morning as usual at 5 minutes before sunrise I open the door to the run so the hens can come out when the inner door opens at sunrise. Next I go and fill the dog bowl with corn for the deer and as I was walking from the shop to the carport (where I put the bowl) I see a deer head down the driveway looking at me. So I shake the bowl and tell her to come here and to my surprise she starts walking toward me as I'm walking toward it. The deer stops about 15' from me and watches me put the bowl down and go inside. I've never had a deer walk toward me like that even though they all know what's in the blue dog bowl.

Day 3
Mama hasn't taken the baby out of the coop yet, tho she is free to do so. Baby is very smart and knows its way around, where the food and water is. It can navigate obstacles and get back to the nest. It even figured out the water nipple, tho Mom didn't show it. I think it must be a girl...

Baby is accepted by the flock. The little rooster is very proud of 'his' chick and tidbits it. Mama takes it outside and they spend all day exploring the run. It's so warm here that baby never needs to go under mama during the day. Just follows her around, digging, climbing, eating bugs, all day long. It is 5 days old.
There are dangers to growing up this way but also major benefits. IMG_7546.jpeg
