I need to work on downsizing my flock a bit. Chicken math got the best of me. I have no problems getting rid of the boys, but I would hate to cull a pullet. Is there anyone in the Columbia area looking to get more birds?

My chicken math is in the subtraction mode now. I'm down to 3 hens and I noticed that I don't have a fly problem this year and for the first time I've not put out any fly traps around the chicken area.

Little Tuffy is 4 weeks old this weekend. For the past week she has been roosting with the adults!
This may have something to do with a snake I discovered a week ago. I went out at dusk to close the coop, and there was a black rat snake crawling into their open doorway. I assume it was after the chick. I grabbed it by its tail and dropped it into a bucket. It was so afraid it didn't try to get out and I had time to find a lid. I drove it a couple miles and let it go. I am not killing snakes, they are so valuable in mouse control. I'm willing to trade a few eggs for that, but not my chick! The faster it grows the better, I'm sure there are more snakes out there...
And I'm really not planning any more increases for the flock. I too want to downsize from now on.
