Thanks! We are very proud of him, my husband is going on his 32nd year of Army service, mostly Reserves but since 9/11 has been deployed 4 times. Anyway, our son also decided to go Army, he is about to begin his 3rd week of Basic, and as luck would have it for us, he is doing it up at Ft. Leonard Wood. So the trip for his graduation won't be a long one.

Looking forward to learning bunches about chickens and "talking" with local folks and not so local folks about the ins and outs of it all ;-)

Hey- everyone seems to be either way south of me or way north east of me lol. Anyway ,, I have a few roosters that need new homes. They were raised by me in my first hatch this year and I cant butcher them

,, I have meat birds raised just for butcher but I cant butcher ones that I played with. If anyone is interested please let me know. I will take any offer and post some pics. There are 2 EE's, 1 polish cross, and a bantam EE

That is great that your husband has served so long and now you son is starting. Sometimes I think it should be mandatory for everyone to serve but... That's kind of a scary idea too!

Anyway, hope everyone is enjoying this heat! I've been swimming in my own sweat all morning and finally came back in the house for the rest of the day! But I did figure out some potential coops/runs and locations! Now for the hard part.

The heat is killer for me today! So sticky and miserable!! I watered the gardens, checked on the chicks, then said to heck with it and came in to get some housework caught up (and yet here I find myself checking out BYC again lol), I'll go back outside in a few hours when it feels much better. June started off so weird/cold around here....we're finally catching up in temperature I think. My tomato plants are very happy about that I prefer the mid 70s-low 80s without the high humidity myself lol.

Think we're about to catch a burst here. Clouds building up and coolish breeze feeling with rain in it.

Nicole, been being lazy today. Fed and watered early. Fresh water and checking on things just now. Even zonked out with a nap which never happens. If you're thinking of building those coops we talked about I've been brainstorming some other improvments on design....

I wad just going to ask you how things are going there!
I still have nothing so I took a chance and candled them... Moving a little in a few but mo internal pips. So holding out at least until Tuesday!

Share your thoughts/improvements! I am going to use an old playskool house for a 'coop'. Just need to get the fencing and them I can get started. Already have the wood.

Wheels are expensive so I want to be able to swap wheeled undercarriage easily from unit to unit.
I don't want to have to be grubbing around crawling on my knees to fit wheel shaft through coop.
Think this can be set under and locked in easily to get-n-go.

I also am setting here looking at babies in coated 1/2 X 1 mesh poultry cages and thinking if they were 4 times the size they could handle a trio or quad and still be moved around easily by hand. Tarp for shade or pulled completely over and even set up on bricks so the birds wouldn't get all wet and muddy when rainy. Pvc frame with an access panel, hanging food and waterer. All the benefits of free range, inexpensive unit, sanitary. Don't need a huge pen for small breeding units - need many small ones, easy to keep sanitary and clean.
