calling any one from missouri

Hellooooo----- Just joined BYC I'm so excited that there are people from Mo. I can get info from :). I have had chickens for 4 years now I live in town but have a very large back yard. I have an older chicken that seems to be loosing weight and just in general does not look good. I will try to figure out how to get pics on here (I hope). She is eating and still appears to be very active. Any ideas?
Thanks

If you don't mind telling, where are you located? I'm near Jefferson City.

Don't know much about the older chicken losing weight. What breed and how old is she exactly? If by older you mean over 5, it's possible (esp. if she's a high egg producing type) she could have ovarian cancer (chickens are the only other creature besides humans that can get ovarian cancer I've heard), or is just at the end of her life cycle. If by older, you are just meaning that she's no longer a spring pullet, and yet she's losing weight, and not just moulting and losing feathers, I'm afraid I don't have any ideas for you. It could be worms or other parasites. It could be a lot of things really. Sorry, I'm not much help, am I?

My thoughts exactly.
During molt they look half their size.

Pick the bird up and feel the keel bone. If it's real prominent then take a fecal sample to test for worm load.

Anyone on here have milk cows?? Have you ever heard of Dairy/herd shares?? I know that we can't sell the raw milk just doing some research.

Has anyone had necropsy done in MO? I went outside just now and found 3 dead birds. I think it's Mareks, but unsure. I have one bird that shows the signs of Mareks and she's been quarantined since symptoms arrived, but she's still alive. The three that died never showed symptoms, but were laying at one end of the run together. All three of their necks were very twisted when I found them. Do you guys think it's disease?

Question, I am headed to Springfield for 3 day, and have no layers at this time( my chickens are too young yet). I was just going to leave my coop closed to keep them warm and to prevent water from freezing. Otherwise if I open the door to the run, I'm afraid the water will freeze and I have one 8 wk old chick(youngest, rest are 12 wks) that I'm afraid will get to cold. I'm new to this, so I was just wondering if you all thought they would be ok.
