how are your chicks laying? this morning one of our bantams layed two eggs at one time and both were soft shelled. Luckly I got them removed before they started eating them. an hour later my easter eggers both laid and egg and I found one of them on both eggs. She had best not be going broody, I need me some more eggs after a winter of nadda.

I have had eggs all winter. Just 3 or4 a day out of 7 chickens but it sure was a bad winter. Now with waarmer weather I started getting 5
But my little we started laying I have 4eggs from her now
I will have silkies eggs arrive from Garry farms they are good people
I never had them before . I hope they hatch as easy as chicken eggs
Good luck with your biddies
I give a small hamburger ball twice a week . It is a good high protein boost helps the hen and the eggs.
I don't buy egg layer peletts. Good luck. Oma:lol:

The church we go to is in Buffalo, MO but we live right on the line of Buffalo and Long Lane.

And most definitely stop by we just got about 250 chicks this morning and we will have about that every week or so. We found out last year where to buy and whom to buy from. There is an auction we go to in Bolivar, MO and we know the regulars and know which ones have good stock. The other one we buy a lot from is Cackle and I know some people don't like buying from hatcheries but they have never done us wrong. We had a Rhode Island rooster we got from them about two years ago and everyone that saw him wanted him and they all said we should show him. Unfortunately we were invaded by foxes and the foxes picked him first.

I used to buy from Murray McMurray every couple years because I was never into showing. As long as the birds were healthy and recognizable as the breeds they were supposed to be, I was happy. I always had great luck with them. BUT... I am now resolute in avoiding hatcheries. I guess I always assumed that excess chicks were shipped off to become brood stock or future pot pies or something. I had NO IDEA that they were conveyered off and dumped into an auger while still alive and ground up! I find that more than disturbing. So... I will hatch my own babies or buy from individuals. Not saying I won't buy a bird from someone that may have originated at a hatchery... but I won't spend my $$ supporting the practice. I get it, it's all about the bottom dollar when you're running a business but I can't support it. I wish there was a way to know if they ALL do that or if there are hatcheries that don't that I could still get behind. It's a shame I'm being that way really... I've actually heard great things about the quality of Cackle's birds. I even had a Salmon Faverolles hen that originated there and she was the nicest of my three SF girls.

Sad fact, I just lost all my Salmon Faverolles to a ****** raccoon tonight. :-( I lost my favorite bird in my whole flock... my boy Angus. He was just 8 months old and on his way to gorgeous. But most of all.. he was a real pet. I loved him. The raccoon had a last meal of lead but my birds are gone. :-( I did manage to collect 6 eggs from them for my bator though so maybe I'll get lucky and a couple will actually hatch. I guess now it's time to start the search for more Faverolles. ~sigh~ Any chance you know anyone at the Bolivar auction who raises them? Or maybe someone at Jacob's Cave will have some nice ones.

Wow... just did a quick proof read on my post and realized that I'm a complete downer right now! Sorry. I'm just really gonna miss my Angus boy. :-(

lungewhipqueen: I am going to start off renting in Olathe, but I am wanting to move to the Missouri side; the laws seem more forgiving on that side of the border. I would love a critter buddy! You sure are right about the people without the animal addiction. My husband is happy that I have something that excites me but I was showing him some pictures of chickens and not more than politely interested.
You'll only be about 30 minutes from me. I'm right down 69 highway, just a few miles east of Louisburg, KS... but I'm on the Missouri side of State Line. You can tell your husband that there are plenty of places where you can have animals but won't have to drive too far to get to KC. Even as far south as I am I can get downtown in 45 minutes. If I were closer to a major highway I could get there a lot faster. I'm not far from 69 highway, but it's always so congested during rush hour so I jaunt across to 71 and it takes me a minimum of 25 minutes to get to it!

I'm with you though, laws aren't as restrictive in Missouri and the taxes aren't as high. Granted, our roads aren't as nice either LOL!

It's a bummer to lose chickens but more so a good rooster.

Raccoons got a total of 22 birds here last year. 10 were chicks when coons broke into the cellar. I think that was payback for trapping and killing young coons.

Until last night, I never killed the raccoons. I always trapped and relocated them. We have a state park about 20-25 minutes away, down in the Amarugia hills where I'd release them. The only time I ever tried to kill a predator was one year when we had a coyote come back FOUR TIMES in one day. My hound dog ultimately took care of her for me... she had already dodged my bullets.

No, last night I was so upset and angry, and the last coon destroyed my live trap, so I didn't feel like I had any choice. If I didn't kill it it was absolutely going to come back and get after my other chickens.

I totally respect the decision to relocate predators but... I don't see it as an option in my world. They carry disease and kill my livestock... They can be killed too. Unless of course it's an endangered species but I have yet to have that happen. It's mostly possums at my place. Coons have come too but this year it's been possums.
You did the right thing.

Hi my brother lives in Olathe, not the best area for raising chickens. I am about 40 min north in Lawson/Excelsior Springs, MO. I have 15 Hens and 4 Roosters, we are active in the local 4-H. North of the River has a better cost of living. I had lived in Kansas most of my life, I have been in MO for 10 years and love it. You might want to look at the Kearney area, easy Highway 30 min to town, good schools, country living.
