Out of the 12 Penedesenca eggs I set, I pulled 2 on day 14. They were both clears: 1 was from pen 4 & 1 from pen1 (weighed 59.8); both were laid on March 11th. I'm not sure of the weight on the egg from pen 4, I wrote down 4.5, but I'm guessing it should have been 45? On April 6 I eggtopsied a Penedesenca that had not hatched or pipped. It was an early quitter, no real form to the body yet. One of the eggs that hatched ( 10/ 3/47.3) hatched with a brown head and faint stripes on it's back, otherwise it was black & yellow. Another egg marked 10/4/50.4, hatched black & white.Exactly 6.5 hours from now. However, there are already 2 chicks out and another zipping. I can't see much till they hatch because they're in pedigree bags and the window is on the side of the hatcher drawer.
I set 75 initially and only 37 made it to the hatcher. 9 quit at about day 12-15 and the other 29 were either infertile or failed to develop from some error in my storage. I had a full tray of eggs that I left out on a table overnight and it rained on them. I think most of those failed to develop.
I number the eggs and record the lay date, weight, cock# and the hen # if I know it and any other egg characteristics like if they're extremely dark, plum color or a long egg (same hen). 22 of the last 30 didn't develop. I'm sure those were the ones rained on.
One peculiar thing is that the oldest eggs had the best success. They were up to 11 days old when set.
I set another 30 on the 5th and most seem to be developing well.
I'm still having a few incubator problems. I made it a bit too tall and the temperature was stratifying so I added 4 fans to pull more air to the lower part but there's still at least a degree difference between the top and middle rack. I swapped the eggs (top to bottom) 3 or 4 times to compensate but not ideal. Then the hatch controller went out a couple days into incubation and ordered a new one which hasn't come in yet so I used a temporary one that isn't exactly precise.
Back to the drawing board.
You had a good hatch didn't you?
EMERGENCY!!! Something is eating my chickens and is getting bold!!!!!!! A few days ago we lost one of our small pullets without a feather-today I woke up, looked out the window-my two black hens were there (good sized chickens!) went to the doctor came back and it's a massacre!!! We have a ten foot fence around the coop-and it's lifted off the ground-my coop is a freakin fortress! but something is getting in-we thought it was a halk until I opened the chicken coop-my hens feathers and her head were in there-but that's all that was left. WHAT THE $@&% is going on?!?!?
I would guess maybe bobcat. Is anything digging under the fence? You know a fox can climb fences like a cat. Think about a game camera[/IMG]![]()

Quote:So I'm finally out of quarantine for the avian flu! FINALLY! I've been getting ants in my pants and am excited to get my chicks next Friday (24th) but until then in trying to solve the curious case of chickeletta and Taylor swift. My ladies are over the age where they should start laying but they aren't even broody! Anytips to get them going? They are late September chicks.
Yeah, they should have kicked in by now. What is their diet? They are americaunas. And thank you, I cheered a beer to them and gave them mealworms to celebrate
My brother used to work in Carthage and had a farm just off the interstate about 4 miles east of Sarcoxie but they live in town now.@ChickenCanoe It's a small world. I teach in Sarcoxie.![]()
That's great. So if I count correctly you have 10 or 11 good quality penedesencas now?Out of the 12 Penedesenca eggs I set, I pulled 2 on day 14. So, out of the 12 Penedesencas I set, 9 of them hatched. ( out of my total eggs set:29, 21 hatched).
Let me know how your hatch turned out.

I just did more investigating and found the exit, it listened up my wiring it looks like and crawled under, but no tracks.. I've yet to see a fox here. We have coins and possums but mid morning attacks? We live on 80 acres backed by a couple hundred outside of Asbury Missouri-close to Kansas state line.Quote:

Do you teach elementary or high school?

I have a few still hatching as I type this.
The ones that are out are real nice.
I'll update you tonight. My hatcher controller arrived yesterday and I think it is clear it came about 2 days late because I think I may have fried some of the eggs the first day in there.
X2 on the fox and digging. What part of the state?
Raccoons are great climbers too and don't always limit movements to nighttime. However, unless it was a family, it wouldn't have eaten 2 whole chickens. If there's no digging, I vote fox. They can jump incredibly high as well.

I put what was left of my hen in front of it..Quote:
