@OhZark Biddies I really enjoyed reading about your coop.

JT
Thanks JT... I enjoyed building it and writing the article!

I need to update it with some duck pics one of these days :hmm

Btw my JT style roll out nest box works great, even though currently it is not being used ...

....everyone went broody and stopped laying, then the baby chicks took it as a roost nest for many weeks, then baby ducks happened, and then the hens started laying in the duck nest... then I got busy/lazy... lol...

I need to clean it out and get them laying in it again:rolleyes:

So they are basically a big weed?

JT
I guess so. They have become an invasive threat in many areas. My father-in-law planted the originals as wind breaks decades ago. But when they get really big, the wind breaks them rather than vice versa. You don't want them near your house or power lines.

It’s killing me to post this but I am needing to rehome my 2 perkin ducks. They will be a year old in August. We have been battling predators to the point my girls are not able to free range at all. Between hawks, owls, foxes and raccoons it’s not safe. It is also not fair to them to be locked in their run all the time. So if there is anyone in the Kansas City Missouri area or within an hour or so willing to take in my girls and give them love and room to free range I would love to hear from you. I’m more than willing to also give you their Duck house, pool, heated bowls for winter and food. I just want my girls happy and here isn’t fair to them. They also each lay an egg at day.

@jduke If you are still looking for some ducks, this person has 2 that she wants to rehome.

Mine are not broody but ain't laying much either. They went from 62% in April to 59% in May to 48% in June and so far this month they are at 33%. Yikes I might have to buy a dozen eggs...

I like their names! What a nice chart!
How do you tell which eggs are from which hens?
Ours, the different breeds lay different color/size. But leghorn eggs all look the same to me so they get lumped together. I have 4 less hens now than when I made the above page in May, a couple sold, a couple lost to predators. So I have just 4 laying, plus the mama hen who won't lay again anytime soon. Some days we only get 1 or 2 eggs. The Speckled Sussex, age 3, is my best layer, better than the leghorns unless one of them is hiding eggs. I still let them free range afternoons.

Yea naming them was a challenge, I had to find some way to identify them as they are all the same breed and age. The only unique feature is the comb that I could see and for one her bad habit of sneaking up behind a hen and jumping on her back. That's Mable, how did I pick that name well she is a Mean A__ Bitch so I needed a name that started with mab. Next is Molly, the back of her comb looks like an axe so I named her Molly Hatchet. Next is Monique, she has a big floppy comb that hangs on her right side so I wanted a French sounding name like she had a beret on. PigPen takes very long dust baths and when she dusts off it literally looks like the Linus cartoon Pigpen. Sweet Pea, used to cuddle up to me and stick her head under my arm. Trudy has one double V in her comb. Tu-Tu has two double V's and last but not least Veronica has one very big V in her comb.

And that's how they got named...

Lamar Swap info--I stopped by New Beginnings Consignment, 1111 E 12th, and yes it's the same swap previously held at auto repair place, and yes, there is a bit of shade. Starts at noon tomorrow which is a 3rd Sunday. I'm planning to bring the orphans if nothing changes.....
