calling any one from missouri

We only have 3 cucumber plants, (well also 1 volunteer) but have been overwhelmed with cukes. Every meal includes obligatory cucumbers. Even when we went to Taco Bell, I brought a cucumber w me. This batch went to the food pantry.

Yesterday when I went out to pick more, I heard the plants singing, “you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone”
You’re gonna miss me by my crunch
you’re gonna miss me in your lunch
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone...

I told my daughter and she found this lovely 4 part harmony rendition:

And ditto for the tomatoes! But NOT the okra.....
Have you tried peeling them, cutting lengthwise, scooping the seeds, stuffing with something like pimiento cheese or tuna salad & then slicing thickly (or not) as a snack or sandwich substitute?

Our garden is winding down. Wood shavings between rows slowed the weeds for awhile, but MO weeds are strong. That vacay week in the middle of growing season seems to be the tipping point every year.

As far as harvest goes…
*Tomatoes-cherry types are still going to town, slicing types have just been O.K. All this wet weather has them prone to spotting. Didn’t plant any Romas as they never do well for me. Current favorites are Chocolate Cherry & Atomic Grape.
*Peppers are producing like crazy as is normal.
*Pickling cukes produced a ton (dill pickles this year), but just have chicken worthy fruit remaining
*Summer squash had lots of blossom rot in the beginning, then 1 hefty harvest & done
*Winter squash are in a separate bed fighting for existence amongst those MO weeds. I think there is a butternut or 2 in there somewhere.

Elsewhere in the yard, the 5# of wildflowers we planted this year are almost as tall as me & so very close to blooming. The herb garden is also thriving. And the grass is still needing to be mowed weekly. So much mowing…(I should have been saving gas receipts to file for a MO tax refund. I will be doing this next year for sure as gas tax rates are going up.)

We’ve had so many volunteer veggies that came up this year, I am wondering what would happen if we didn’t plant anything next spring, just nurture what comes up. Some, maybe all, of these volunteers have out-produced/out-lived what I planted.
Volunteers include
tomatoes, pole beans, lettuce, squash, peppers, cucumbers, basil.....

We interrupt this evening for a rainbow....

Looks like it did the last time you saw it, grass is smidgen higher. Pretty dry up to the other night and we got a lot of rain overnight.

That siding looks pretty much like the new house north of town on 67 behind a 6' chain link fence on the east side just after you pass the 60 west exit.

I’m going to try to find that other house today before I head back to STL
