We had a pretty bad tornado pass about 900' to the north of our house some years back. I forget how many miles it went skipping over some houses and not others. I've never seen it so black during the day. My butt prints are still in the garage concrete wall! We had huge oaks down all over the property and 3 on the garage but very little damage. I still remember a big hickory tree just about 50' north of the garage that was twisted in two and looked like a million tooth picks.

It took 2 guys cutting and me driving a rough terrain forklift all day the next day to clear my driveway so we could go to Houston for my daughters wedding.

I was very impressed that my insurance agent was there the next day to see if I needed any money or anything else.

The next road over from me was destroyed completely from the top of the hill down to the end except for one house at the end of the road.

Wow, JT, that is amazing! Praise God you escaped with your life! Were anyone hurt on that next road over? And that was here in Missouri, eh?

Yes, it started around Ellsinore and went east for quite a ways up to W highway around Wappapello.

It happened when most people were at work so not many injuries IIRC.

I have a pic of that tornado somewhere. It went east on a county road across K highway about half a mile south of us, just marching majestically along. I was terrified and mesmerized as I watched it go. I hadn't been in Missouri very long and it was the first time I'd ever seen one.

You talk about how capricious that tornado was, skipping some houses and demolishing others. Some friends of ours had a hair-raising experience. The husband was tinkering with his car in the driveway in front of their garage which was next to the house, just a few feet away from the house. This was on Hwy 60 just outside Ellsinore. She was in the house and went out and started trying to get him to come in the house but he wouldn't come. Older couple, in their late 60's, I believe. The more she yelled the more he refused. Finally she went in and hunkered down without him and he sat out there in his car. The tornado took out a brand new brick house across from them, then skipped over the highway and demolished their garage! Left him sitting safe in his car, not six feet from what was left of the garage, and didn't touch the house, not ten feet away.
