What breeds do you recommend for our weather!

I do NOT recommend breeds with big floppy combs. We had a beautiful Black Jersey Giant and a winter or two ago he lost half his comb and half his wattles to frostbite. It was extremely painful for him and very sad to see him suffer.

Welcome! Are you new to the area, to BYC, or both? What part of MO are you in (in general)? I'm in the SE part but not as far as the Bootheel. Kind of the Poplar Bluff area. I'm originally from the great Southwest, as in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. Missouri has been ... um, an education for me, lol. As in, a. Humidity and b. TICKS! But I'm loving it! It's my home now.

I made another chevron bowl but didn't plan it correctly so it's not the intended shape. Lesson learned draw it out on graph paper before making the rings...

hello, just wondering who comes from missouri

Hey, anyone have Black Copper Marans? I got this girl from Rural King in Warrenton. She was a surprise as she was completely mislabeled as a Saphire Olive Egger. I'm not sure what's desirable for BCM hens (coloration wise). She seems to have a brown neck instead of copper. I see so much variation when I Google it, lol. Also, at what age do they typically start laying? How dark do you think her eggs will be? I know it won't be super dark like from a breeder that's been working on color. She's about 15 weeks old and came from Hoover's Hatchery. Her name is Bootsie. Thanks!
