This morning I was tardy putting out breakfast for the deer and the doe and fawn were standing there where the bowls go and just looking at me as I walked up to them. I got within 15' before they calmly walked away about 30' and waited for me to put the bowls of feed and corn down. Hmm time to refill the bowls already.

The call ducks are really enjoying their free range time.
The hound keeps a watchful eye over them from his comfy seat while they waddle around. 😄View attachment 3641533View attachment 3641534View attachment 3641536

That's a lot of ducks, lol. I want a little duckling, but, my sister says no, lol. Do you have to have a pond for ducks?. My brother had ducks. He was so proud of them. When he first got them he put them in the bathtub to swim around. When they got bigger and ready to go outside, they wouldn't get in the pond. Turned out there was a large turtle in the pond. My brother passed away from covid 3 years ago and his ducks seemed to grieve. Some wandered off and never came back.
What is a call duck? I don't really know much about ducks.

I love seeing all the wildlife out here. Deer don't seem to be as afraid of humans as they used to be. We had a doe with 3 fawn out here earlier this year. They were so cute. My son lives in Cape Girardeau and they have deer that come right up and eat out of their hands.

I don't have a pond, and honestly don't really want one for the ducks because of turtles. The calls are minature ducks, more or less bantams. They can easily be drug under by a turtle or even a big fish. They were originally bred as live decoys for duck hunting but they are basically just kept for pets, yard candy. They come in many different colors and each one has a standard of perfection for showing. There are standards for body type and bill length as well. Most of Mine are what you call pet quality, meaning they don't fit the standard. When you get into breeding for show quality they get real expensive as they are hard to hatch.

Wow. That's very interesting. I had no idea that there was such a thing. So they're like my Bantam boys, compact and adorable.

We also have Standard size ducks, those black and white ones are called Cayugas. We keep them for eggs and meat. Plus they are just fun as pets too.
I used to want a pond but they all seem just as happy with those concrete mixing tubs and seem to choose those over larger containers of water anyway.. so that is just what we've stuck with.
Ducks are messy and smelly if you can't clean out their water pans often. I had a 60 gallon tank for the calls at my old place and it was so hard to keep clean.. i think I'll stick with the smaller pools this time.
