calling any one from missouri

Kathy-

What kind of roos do you have? I might be able to get past the Marek's part. We lost some earlier this year to Marek's so I am somewhat paranoid. My son is 9 and quite distraught over his roo.

I'm a tad confused. Everything I've read about the Marek's vaccination is that it only prevents symptoms, but doesn't actually prevent contraction or contagion. Any bird older than 6mnths should be considered a carrier. With everything I can find on it, basically it keeps those under 6mnths from dying from it, but not from contracting it or passing it on to others. So if you get a bird over 6mnths old, Mareks wouldn't be considered a problem for that bird and only a problem for your younger than 6mnth old stock if they haven't been vaccinated.

So any bird over 6mnths old you get from Kathy or anyone else should be fine in so far as that bird goes whether or not they were vaccinated. Because you've had Marek's there, you should only bring in bird's younger than 6 mnths if they've been vaccinated.

Kind of a crummy vaccination if you ask me. Should do more/offer better protection. Do I have that right? Anyone know?

Kathy-

Where are you located in SW MO? I live in Columbia. I have been looking for swap meets but do not see any until June. I also placed an ad on Craigslist. Funny how I at times have been overrun with roos and now i am desperate for one.

Marek's- I know my new babes are vaccinated but I still worry about it for my original hens. Either passing it on or a new bird briniging it in. But at this point, I just need a new rooster.

Missy There is an animal auction in Keytesville today. It starts at noon and i assure you there will be lot's and lot's of roosters. It's a good time, you should think about coming up.

I'm about 40 minutes north of Springfield, Mo. and about 2 hours from Columbia I think, maybe less. I used to drive my uncle to the VA Hospital but it's been a couple years. I've also been there for the Mule Shows, we raise mules too.

IDK Missy, since I haven't been able to find out anymore. The way I read it so far, you should figure all your remaining birds are in fact carriers already and your property already "contaminated". It doesn't seem feasible that you could clean up or do anything about it when they say it can blow in from even miles away. Your only fear in regards to Marek's and bringing in new birds is to the new birds themselves. If they are younger than 6 mnths and were not vaccinated, they are at risk, no threat to your existing stock. Since your new chicks will be vaccinated already and so long as you continue that practice for any new chicks, you should be fine in regards to Marek.

I don't know about non-vaccinated birds over 6mnths. You can't vaccinate them I guess, but everything just says it's so common and contagious that all birds over 6mnths you should assume have already been exposed. I don't like that. Does anyone know more or where to get more info? How old was your DS's roo?
