calling any one from missouri

Hello fellow Missourians!

I am from Southeast Missouri and have 7 illegal chickens! I put my house up for sale in March so that we can move to the country and have as many animals as we want! I absolutely love my house (it's a bungalow built in 1914), but I love my pullets more and I'd rather be able to keep my girls without the constant fear of having to give them away. My husband always stresses out when he hears an egg song and thinks that we'll get complaints any day now from our neighbors. They've been laying since February and no complaints yet, so hopefully it will stay that way and we can sell our house and move them out to the country! I'd love for them to have lots of land to run around on.

Hey Ed- I am in the Midway area of Columbia. Nice to meet someone in central MO.

I wanted to get down to the Lake last weekend for the big Jacob's cave swap meet but my oldest son graduated from high school so the weekend was too busy. I have decided that when my toddlers start laying in August, I am going to butcher my older hens. I took them to the Amish in Clark before but also heard about a husband and wife in Lynn that have a business of butchering. I don't want to do it myself.

Decided to get rid of my son's brabanter rooster. We got him a few months ago as a possible replacement for his show rooster that died. But he just isn't doing it for us. He's great to his hens, very protective, but we really miss his wyandotte. I put an ad on Craig's list but no bites yet. He may end up in the freezer with the hens. I am torn between finding a new show rooster and just sticking with our BB Red bantam rooster. We will be entering 4 birds in the boone county fair in July but I think if we want to get serious about winning any ribbons, we need to find a show quality rooster. Some friends of ours gave us the name of a guy that helps out 4-H'ers with good quality birds and we may need to go to him. I know what I think looks good but when I look in the APA poultry book, none of our birds are "standard".

Well I think its supposed to rain again today so I need to go check on the girls to make sure all have plenty of food and water. I have been feeding them my oversupply of lettuce from the garden and this makes them very happy.

Have a good weekend.

I am so glad that someone started this thread! I was wanting to do it for a long time but never got around to doing it.

I'm from south-west Missouri. I have 2 roosters, 14 hens, and 9 chicks that our hen hatched. All our chickens are Australorps. Well bye for now!

I am wondering if anyone knows of someone that breeds standard show quality birds in MO? My son and I are in the market for a pair of show quality birds that we could purchase. We have some breeds in mind but are not set on any. My son would like them to be colorful, as is our BB red bantam pair. But we don't want a game pair that would require the combs to be trimmed. Any suggestions?

I know most back yard enthusiasts don's care about show quality but for 4-H we need to think about it. Ultimately, we just want pretty birds that are friendly.

Had a blast at the Keytesville sale today. Got a pair of cochins, 10 ? BR I think, 5 autralorp chicks, 5 guinea chicks, 7 bunnies. The kids were tired so we had to leave before the goats started

Trying to find the critters I bought after checking out was a nightmare though.....next time I will have someone go get them immediately out of the ring.

Sounds like a dangerous place to go.

I might need to go for a visit to Keytesville.

Got rid of my brabanter rooster. Gotta love Craig's list. Now I only have my BB red roo. I am torn between glad he is gone but knowing I will miss his early morning crows. I am going to take the time to find the right roo, not rush into it. Will only get one as a mating pair that we could breed. Not so easy to do. My son and I have spent hours on the computer today(raining anyway) looking at breeds. Now its just a matter of finding them.

My girls have been in the yard all day. Rain did not deter them. Some have become quite spoiled and roost on the deck waiting for a handout.

We were there too! It was our first time, but was not much fun Trying to keep the kids unmuddy ages 4 1/2 and 1 1/2. I was happy to sell my roosters, the big ones for $4, and the little ones for $6.50- not sure if that was for the whole lot or per bird as my item #'s were 740 and 741, and they were trying to hurry things along. It was a rainy mess, and I loaned our rubber mats to some girls trying to keep the polish they bought dry. My son wasn't payin attention and brushed his muddy shoe against this gal's nice white tank sweater, so I ran & got some baby wipes while apologizing and trying to make the smear not so apparent. What a nice person, she was very gracious about it. My son roped a guy sitting next to us to draw a bunch of Toy story characters on his Doodle pad. So really, I enjoyed all but getting soaked & muddy. We had to leave also, so they will mail me a check.

I saw a lot of sick birds there so I'll be Lysol spraying my cages!

Sorry I didn't get to meet any of you all! I was wearing a blue shirt and carrying a cute little girl in pink.

Hey Tediliza! I think you all were sitting at the other end of the bleachers from us.
We really like the keytesville sale but you do have to watch what you buy. I did buy sick birds once.
Today I bought 2 blue cochin pullets, one of them got it's let injured by the way they get slammed around but I think she may heal.
