calling any one from missouri

Michigan Transplant- My husband is the same. He enjoys the eggs but rolls his eyes when my boys and I drive all over the state in search of new birds. When I mentioned that I wanted to build a rabbit hutch for some of the birds, he mumbled something about how much money I spend on birds and such. How is it different than what he spends on hunting?

I know I said I love snow but this is getting ridiculous. Here we go again. 6 + inches expected. I let the girls out today knowing they would be cooped up again for awhile. They were just getting happy with the bare grass. Batten down the hatches. Here comes more white stuff.

I have not been to Jacob's cave but first heard about it from a relative right after last year's. It doesn't take much to get me excited about birds. I have heard there is a huge variety.

Where are you at that is supposed to get snow? I don't think we are. I am in Cabool. I know I have to stop and keep any hatching this year.. Ducks and geese are expensive to winter. We are. Buying 150 pound a of chops.. Twice a week, can not get any more.... And my hubby's gripes too, but I can't disregard hum anymore.. I bike my back and it is all falling to him tom do. When I was doing it, I just ignored his complaints, even tho he secretly loves them too..lol. But they are expensive especially since we don't eat them and don't like duck or geese eggs. I scramble them with a lot of milk for the dog and cat.

. I am a very wasteful person it seems.

I have never been to Jacobs Cave either. Maybe we can set a date this year and we can all meet there. That would be great! I would be coming alone as my DH has no interest in the chickens. But I can drop him off at the lake to fish!

We are expecting snow here in Jefferson County (right by St. Louis). This winter $#@^ is getting old!

Take care everyone and be safe.

Men don't think "THEIR STUFF" costs that much money! LOL Women spend way to much so anything we spend money on that they don't think is worth it is way to much.
I saw someone's ice chest incubator and am thinking of trying to make one myself this summer so that I don't have to buy chicks. The chicks are all that expensive (less than $2.50 a piece ) and I don't mind going to Estes to pick them up but would love to "do it myself" one of these day, just to see if I can.
Checked my girls this morning and one of them is hopping around and not using her left foot much. I washed her foot and checked it but didn't see anything wrong. When I touched it, the foot was cold so held her foot till it warmed up and then put her back in the pen. Sure hope it isn't to serious or she might be dinner.

We have snow flurries in the forecast for later this week and sure hope they are wrong. I moved down her from MI to get away from the snow. Have to admit it is funny when there is a "dusting" on the ground here and they close schools. You all don't know what "SNOW" is till you go to another state that GETS snow and you can't go anywhere because your car is buried and it takes the snow plows days to get to your house. THANK GOD for southern states that don't really get snow. I haven't had to SHOVEL once since moving down here in 2006.

Sounds like my life! Husband wants the eggs and now meat but doens't want anything else to do with it. He's actaullya mking plans for a 2nd coop so we can get meat birds... I've tried to discourage him but he doesn't get it. I'd rather breed the RIR's and cull those as we go for meat. What's a girl to do?!?!?!

I sympathize with you misschickenlittle. Know what you are going through. My hubby wants to down size already and they aren't even a year old AND he has never once gone down to feed them or give them water. Doesn't even know HOW to fill the water container. ( I bought one of the ones you turn over and fill from the bottom and then when you put it in the pen, you can hook it to electric.) Little does the hubby know, I ordered 8 more chicks on Monday. My grand daughter is going to be here and wants a pet of her own so thought I would get some "color" going out there and get some black and whites (wyandottes and PR) to go with the RIR's. I am thinking about changing the pick up and hatch dates since I like to spend as much time out there as possible and if I have to stay in the house most of the days with her (she is having her tonsils out and has to stay CALM) I can't devote as much time to them so might get them a week later and she will have two days with them and then will go home til the following Sunday. I keep her Sunday thru Tuesday afternoon usually.
I do "spoil" mine but not the extent that I have read other so. NO curtains for mine. I did paint the inside of the chicken house but just because I didn't like the old wood. I do have fans going in the window's during the summer, only because the air conditioner wouldn't work right

If I can't stand to be in there winter or summer, how can I expect the chickens to like it ????
No meat birds for me. The RIR's will have to do as our meat birds and that is only when they stop laying or something else to cause me to kill them. Since I do have so many RIR's I think I could kill one of them for food since I don't have any favorites, they all look the same or close that I don't think more favorable of one over the others. Maybe I am weird but how can you tell them apart to have a favorite one? I have the plastic leg bands but some have found a way to take them off and I find them on the floor of the inside pen. Guess they have sealed their own fate

MI Transplant - I sympathize with you about the snow too!! I'm a born and bred Nebraska girl and the winter's there may not be as bad as MI but they are worse than here!

Interested in parting with a few of your RIR's? I've got a RIR rooster I need to go pick up but I need to add a few more girls... I might be getting some Ameracauna's but not sure what the asking price is yet.

Have fun with your granddaughter! Sounds like she'll be in some pain...

Lots of grandma love should do the trick!

Hang in there with the snow we will be getting. We're down to 1-3 inches in the forecast but you just never know. This lake is a funny place!
