calling any one from missouri

I told my kids I was limiting them to 5 birds from Jacob's cave and they of course said- 5 each right? We may need to build a wing onto the chicken house. I think we plan to go down Friday. I may have to try harder to sell some hens to make room.

I have an adorable broken(black and white) mini rex rabbit buck sitting on my lap as I type. I wish you could have seen the smile on my sons face when he bought him yesterday in Sedalia. This little guy is so sweet and soft. Even came with pedigree papers. Now we have to be patient and find a doe to go with him. One at a time. Chickens are still my favorite.

Chickens have been out in the yard most of the weekend. Spent time grooming the house and hanging out with the birds. Spring fever is in me.

ooh I have never heard of Jacob's Cave swap meet. Will try to talk hubby into going! It is about a 2 hour drive for us-not bad. Hopefully the weather will be alright that weekend. Thanks!

Be careful, if you buy 'cheap' chickens they often are sick, and you end up paying money for medicines! I'm thinking I might be open to splitting a Cackle Chick order with you, as my sister lives in St. Louis and you aren't far from St. Louis, right?

I posted this on the d'uccle thread but had to share: Day 14 for my eggs in the incubator is coming up on tuesday. Out of my 23 eggs I set, I had one nonfertile, and 1 quitter, so am left with 21 eggs due to hatch March 22nd. I had a panic yesterday morning when I'd opened up the cabinet and the thermometer read 106! I'd covered one of the vent holes the night before because the basement was chilly and the temperature had dipped. I noticed the thermometer probe had slipped a bit so was closer to the 'heater' so I hope that was the case and not that my chicks will be adversely afffected. I'll candle again on Saturday when I take them off the egg turner just to make sure. Time for me to go back to bed. My son had woke me up, and after I helped him, I remembered I'd left the coop window open-- not realizing it was going to SNOW. So at 1 a.m. in my pajamas I put on my boots and go to the coop, shut the window, grab a towel that I keep in there, and dry off my Jersey Giant rooster who is closest to the window. He usually does great in the cold, but I didn't like the idea of wet feathers! On a funny note, my favorite most sweetest d'uccle hen, decided to jump up on this board we were painting with green barn paint to get some attention. She now has green feet, as that oil based paint does not wash out easy. I was dismayed to see my hens eating the paint that had dripped on the ground, and shooing them away did not work. I hope I don't have any dead chickens tomorrow from paint poisoning. Some of them now have green beaks. And of course tonight it decides to rain and snow, so I wonder if the paint is even going to set. I KNEW we should have done it yesterday! Did I mention that we were painting my little 3x4 ft coop that I made to be a 'grower coop? Good night all!

Actually, I am a member of the River Hills farmer's market. We had our first sale this last Saturday. Our next will be April 9th. Most of the sellers there are good people with healthy animals. One lady there buys a HUGE amount of chicks from Cackle Hatchery and re-sells them there. I'm not sure what types she has, or how much they are, but she had Polish, Sebrights, and Cinnamon Queens this last Sat. And of course I always try to take a few chicks. We also have a sale in Troy at Tractor Supply, but I believe those don't start until May.
