What's kickin Chicken;

I have gotten birds from a private seller and I have ordered from Estes twice and have not had any problems (So Far). My RIR's are almost a year old and haven't had a single problem and I have 4 week old chicks, also no problems. NON of mine have been vaccinated.
The only problems are with the RIR's loosing feathers on their backs by their tail and on their butts. I have added more room a few days ago and redid their area so hopefully things will improve there or someone is going into the freezer.
Relax and enjoy your new babies. AND post pictures.

Thank you Michigan Transplant ---- I already was worried about it and then I was reading today...

..I ordered my chicks and had them vac. for marek's,and I don't think the feed store or TSC does that so I have been trying to be good....... but I'm losing my will power.....so what do you guys think about the marek vac. is it really that important?,if the chickens get it will I have to just cull the TSC chickens??? should I stay strong or does it matter that much..We had respir. problems before and was really hard,so I was trying to start out better this time.Last time I got my chickens from swap,so I don't want to go down or anywhere around that road again

I'm reposting my question I hope you don't mind...but I've been reading alot today about marek and now I'm really scared...and needed some insight, should I vac these chicks for it or is it too late they are 1 week old now?........how big of a problem is it in our area or is it everywhere?

I read up on the Mareks thing a while back and you can still vaccinate the chicks yourself, the main thing is that they get the vaccine weeks before any type of exposure-- aka still in the brooder. It might not have the same effectiveness rating though. I decided that since I would be taking my bantams to shows I'd vaccinate. The vaccine is hard to find this time of year, I did find some at Twin City Poultry supply online and am supposed to get it this week. Every time I order, they have to ship it in a cooler which is added cost. This time I got smart and ordered 2 bottles to ship in the same cooler since I plan on hatching more than one batch of chicks this year. Of course you have to get syringes too. Costs me about 40 to 50$ each time I order with the shipping coolers making it pricier. It's probably less expensive to not do the vaccine, but I think of as much time and money as I've invested in the birds I'm keeping, the vaccine will pay for itself, if some wild bird with Mareks decides to shed feathers and poop in my chicken yard, or in case the shows put them at risk.

I looked on Jeffer's vet supply for vac. and the manf. recommended to burn vac. after you use what you are going to use and the vac. is only good after you mix it for 24hrs. (24 or 48)????? 1000 dose seems like a waste is there a smaller bottle ????? thanks for your help.. I have 9 right now that won't be vac..will they be the only ones to get marek/show signs for marek... if it comes on the place??? thank you again
