For the last two nights, we've been serenaded loudly by one chick. S/he stands in the brooder while the rest are sleeping, and peeps as loud as possible. I've gotten up to check them to make sure someone's not hurt or cold/hot/whatever, and it's the same little devil standing proud and yelling. During the day, it's about the same vocally as the rest, but at night, it's only the same one that likes to be really loud at night.

They are in a big rubbermaid homemade brooder in our living room, and the only thing I can think of is that that particular chick doesn't like the quiet and dark (other than the heat lamp).

Any ideas? Should I get a radio and see if the "guard chick" as DH calls it, relaxes it's watch? Do I just have one really loud chick? Is there anything else I should check?

Thanks!

I wonder if this very vocal chick will turn out to be a rooster? My loud little guy is obviously a roo, and he used to peep so loud all night long!

I don't know about this, mine are peeping moderately when they're scratching around and so forth, very vocal when I try to catch one to check him/her out, but none are uniquely loud. Right now, there's no noise at all coming from the brooder.

I used a ceramic heat lamp that produced no light. Our chicks slept though the night, never a peep out of any of them.

That chick might be a rooster. I think I have one too, all others will be pecking around or playing in the yard. This little one stands tall and peeps, constantly checking the surroundings.

I have the same "guard chick" and it's the youngest in the brooder. I keep running over thinking it must be getting hurt or picked on, nope, just standing on the feeder tall and proud and peeping as loud as heck while everyone else is sound asleep! UGH!

Thank you! All of them are from the straight run bins, so who knows what I ended up with boy/girl wise. Silly little roo...he wasn't as bad last night, I only heard him once, but then, we might just be sleeping through it more.

They are all a pretty quiet bunch, lots of very quiet peeping, except for that one - at night.

Still probably a few weeks to find out what I rolled in the chicken lottery, but I'll probably start calling that one a him.
