i have 6 khaki campbells 1 drake about 15 weeks old. Im very new to poultry. i got them for laying as i have 4 kids and bake alot. when should i start feeding them "egg" feed? and which are the best feeds? When should i get eggs?

I started feeding my Khaki Campbell and Pekin layer feed around 18 weeks. It was a bit early but I had just run out of their normal food and they were so close to the age they needed it I just went ahead and bought it. I think ideally you start feeding layer closer to 20 weeks. I just got my first egg from one of the two yesterday morning and Monday they turned 21 weeks. Pretty sure it was my Pekin that laid it but not 100%. I have been told Khaki's lay a little later but generally between 20-24 weeks if they are healthy and happy.

I don't use duck eggs for food, but I start my ducks on breeder feed around a month before laying time. Kind of like if you change your own diet, changes don't happen overnight or even over a few days. This is most important if you're feeding for breeding since you want your eggs to produce strong, healthy ducklings. A two week lead time is probably fine for eggs that will be consumed, and probably even starting it when they begin laying would be fine. One thing you need to remember about Campbells, though, is that there isn't really a "laying season" since most of them lay all year.

With my Runners (I am told they are similar to Khakis in a number of ways) I set out free choice oyster shell when they started playing hop on top, and switched slowly over to layer feed as most of them started laying. Turns out, mine started acting out mating about a month before the first egg, which is what Storey's Guide suggests (a month before laying).
