hubs just called....he is one the way home with a Chinese gosling. well either way i am excited about having them. i have wanted one for a long rime and love thier personalties.

glad to know you were not meaning to attack. hard to tell intent with words online.

will post a pic when new baby comes hime.

oh, so on the meyer hatchery website, it says the Africans are friendy. is that not the case? or are they just friendly with thier favorite? or just a wide variation in personalities? from my expereimce with chickens the personalities seems to be pretty perdictable for a breed.

Africans and Chinese are "known" for being more aggresive. Just as Sebastopols are known for being a calm breed. Yes they can be "friendly" but I won't ever let my son (15 months old) near the Africans. He does however walk freely around the Sebastopols with no issues. Many of our Sebbies are adult breeders we bought, not raised as gosli gs like the Africans. I can work with and handle the adult Africans when needed, they move around easily for me. They are not as enjoyable as the other breeds we have though.

I know what you mean with chickens, polish ar ditsy, RIR are mean and brahma are quiet and calm.

they are very pretty!!

well if they end up mean to the kids, they will become dinner. lol and if that happens we will probably get something friendlier next time. we will see what happens.

so we had a weird thing happen.... the bulb in our heat lamp EXPLODED!!!! Glass flew everywhere!!! we have never had that happen before. Well...while looking over the goslings to make sure they were not hurt we found something like a tumor on the African....

What do you think? it is on the belly of the gosling. I figured we would watch it to make sure it doesnt get worse and hope it resolves itself.

gah....i cant get the direct link to C/P on tis site on my tablet. i see the picture. did the link work?

Oh, I'm so happy you're getting him a companion!
What if we end up with 2 males? Will that create a problem later on?
It shouldn't be a problem at all. Even in the wild, Konrad Lorenz often observed ganders forming pairs. They could still occasionally mate with non-paired females, but they preferred each other's company. Problems with ganders fighting generally only occur when a female is introduced.

Adult geese don't need much weather protection. As long as they can seek shelter from heavy rains and storms - and seek shade, if it gets really hot - they'll be fine. Until they're fully feathered they should be kept warm and dry.

What they do need is to be protected from predators, probably much in the same way as your chickens.

Geese - and especially growing goslings - poop a lot, so keep in mind that they'll soon be huge birds and don't make the pen too small.

Geese love bathing. A plastic kiddie pool is perfect for two geese and easy to empty and refill every day. It also helps them keep their feathers neat and clean. Make sure to monitor their baths until they're big enough to get out of the pool by themselves.

Grey, that would be the belly button. Sometimes they are more pronounced shortly after hatching and they quickly get covered by down and then feathers.

Couldn't see the image, but would bet money that is what you saw.
