Camera thread!! Opinions re: great cameras (esp. for critter photos)

So many choices out there! All profess to be great. Confusing!

Thought a thread here might be helpful to others in addition to being helpful to me.

Your opinions/experiences most appreciated.

Technical wish list:
Looking to figure out what digital camera to buy (my current one is going bad) - I want it to excel for critter photography.
- Fast reaction time when snapping photo so that shots are not as likely to be blurry and so that the odds of capturing special moments are increased
- Fast recovery for taking multiple shots back to back click click click just like that!
- Great zoom-ability
There may be other technical things I'm just not thinking of right now.

In addition:
- Lightweight so not a deterrent to bring with me here or there
- Reliable - good brand
- Easy view screen (the one on my current camera is so small and scratched so easily that it's really worthless)
- All other things being equal, affordability would be nice
- Clearly need something currently still on the market

Hi Carol - I would think a few hundred dollars might be enough to get the desired features but I could be oh so wrong...! I want something good but am not in need of super fancy schmancy features I'll never use.

BTW, BYCers will sometimes post amazing pics, responders will ask what kind of camera and the answer is typically something a few hundred dollars give or take but those threads are scattered all over and can never find them later so I thought maybe having a camera chat all in one place would be nifty.......

I run a Cannon Powershot SD1400 IS

I paid about $240 when it came out.

I have a Canon Powershot A1100 IS..which apparently is not being sold anymore, but I wanted to post a few pics so you can see how well a Canon point and shoot works. This camera was under $200.

I have pictures of several animals in leghold traps..they are still alive...but I won't post them unless someone tells me it's ok.

I have a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS and my DH, who recently bought himself a fancy Nikon, bought 4 for his kids for Christmas because he liked the photos it took so well.

I have a Canon 50D and I love the thing like it was an extension of my own hand, but it was very pricey and lenses can cost an arm and a leg! It takes beautiful pictures though and is very, very fast. It is pretty heavy though and is definitely not a "put in your pocket" kind of camera, but it is perfect for me.

Before I bought my SLR, I had an Olympus SP560 with an 18X zoom. Now they make a camera with something crazy like a 30X zoom for about $300 or so dollars. It was a great camera though and probably more like what you are looking for. Canon and Nikon also make comparable cameras, but when I was researching, the Olympus took far better photographs and felt more sturdy.
