Agreed with Teila. You can have both! Consider how you could have your fish pond by re-using, re-cycling and building it yourself. Are there any natural landscaping areas already in place that would lend themselves to a small pond being integrated into the area? Perhaps an area with a natural slope where you could use an old bath tub with drain installed... That drain could be used to water a garden, and you could build a stone wall around the tub to make it fit into the landscaping. Give hubby time to fall in love with the chickens, and see how well they benefit your gardening, and provide his breakfast. Then plant the idea seed... pond water will make your gardens grow so fast you'll need to jump back out of the way so those plants don't knock you over. A pond stocked with fish will actually decrease the mosquito population in your yard. The mosquitoes will be attracted to the pond, where they will lay eggs. The larvae will feed the fish. Therefore, there will not be any larvae left to pupate into the next generation of blood suckers.
