So long as the diet is balanced and complete the protein should not be a problem. With lower quality foods the protein is not balanced both with the type of protein and the rest of the nutrients which is where growth problems come from. Most of the higher quality dog foods do not have different formulas for different ages. They have different flavors and maybe different energy levels for pet versus working dogs but many do not have a puppy food and even fewer separate large and small breed puppies. If everything is balanced with high quality ingredients it's not necessary.
