Can a broody try to eat her chick once he hatches? HELP??!!

I was watching my chick hatch, but the broody wasnt sitting, she was just standing up, looking at it like she was unsure what to do. Then she pecked it. I thought maybe she was trying to help it out of its shell, but she started pecking really hard,and stepping on it. the poor chick was screaming, so I took him out and put him in the brooder. That probably wasnt the right thing to do, but I panicked! what do I do now? he seems kind of weak?!

It sounds like the right thing to do to me. Not all broody hens will raise their chicks. From what you've described, it does sound as though she was going to kill him. Does she have other eggs? If so, you should keep watch on those in case the same thing happens.
