Yes you can successfully hatch duck eggs with a chicken, however, wild duck eggs are really hatched in a muddy condition so remember to keep the eggs moist. i used a wet paper towel several times a week. our RIR hen hatched out a wild nest of eggs that were protected in a construction zone, until the last possible moment then a worker brought me the eggs .
OUr RIR hen loved them ducks and paniced when they went to the water. I have heard of Ducks hatching and raising chicken eggs, the chicks will follow the duck mamma into teh water and chicks DONT SWIM WELL . not a bit they swim like a brick.

have fun

yes...look closely at my avatar...thats a duck on that chickens back!
I have had a poor hen hatch out and then raise ducklings.....I say poor hen because she looked so cute standing by the small pond protecting them and then calling to get them to come out and they did....they followed her everywhere. It was something to see!

Hi! Yes, chickens can incubate and hatch duck eggs. Last winter/spring I let the girls in my Frizzle pen have most of my Pekin eggs. There were so many broody Frizz girls I took out the nest boxes (for their own safety, they were piling) and let them brood on the coop floor. I just added new duck eggs every week and collected the ducklings as they hatched.
I don't know about the chicken/duck identity crisis --- I took all the ducklings as they hatched and hand-raised them inside.
