Can a critter take eggs without breaking them?

Yesterday, I left two eggs in the black container on top of the hay bale. I forgot to bring them in the house and this morning, the eggs were gone. This has happened two other times in the past year or so when I put the eggs down somewhere and forget to bring them in.

What, if any, critter can take two eggs...without dropping either one somewhere, or knocking down the container?

Rats, crows, squirrels, coons, possum, dog, fox, coyote....you name it, they can take them without breaking them or knocking down that pan.

I think I underestimated those crooks! I may put out our game-cam and see what shows up. I'll have to check if something as small as a squirrel can activate the motion sensor.

More than likely it's going to be a snake since they swallow them whole. Not sure if you have black snakes in your area but if you do, I would bet that's the likely culprit. Also known as black rat snake or rat snake.

Just last week I was reaching up to cut open a new bale of hay and surprise! This snake was literally 4 inches from my face. Talk about adrenaline rush! Its just a baby, probably 3 feet long at the most. It must live in the hay storage area. I doubt it could eat an egg but maybe mom or dad is lurking around somewhere...

I wouldn't say it's a baby, young adult maybe. But it's doing a great job eating the rodents that could spoil your hay and feed.

He best exterminators were created by God! I also love having spiders around. Mosquitos, moths, flies, and the worst...June bugs! (I know..I know...why June bugs you say? You just never know when one of those clumsy things is going to *POINK* right in your face/eye...there's no getting away from them!)

You might be surprised at how frequently snakes are bailed up in hay and straw.

If I leave the main door to the coop open, the ravens will clean out the nests. I've also found a 4' bull snake curled up in a nest. It slithered off with two suspicious bulges in the middle.

I like snakes and enjoy having them around...it's just that "Oh snap!" moment when they un-camoflauge themselves right in front of me. I was out riding my horse a couple of weeks ago and came right up on one sunning itself on the trail. Luckily, it didn't bother my horse at all...he saw it and walked right over it!
