Can a drake have too many hens?

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what my drake's problem is. He is 1 year old with 4 hens that he grew up with, one of them was gone for about 2 months living inside with bumblefoot. Re integrating her was a bit difficult because he didnt accept her right away, he wouldn't let her eat or near the other hens. It took awhile for him to let her in and eventually start mating with her. She became so obsessed with him harassing him daily. She would snip at the other girls when they would go near him.

Eventually he started nuzzling her until she bleeds. I'm currently raising 3 more hens for him but is this going to make things worse? I'm afraid he will be overwhelmed. He is such a good boy otherwise. Should I get another drake? The problem is that the hen he injures isn't completely normal her legs are deformed so she walks funny and has never laid an egg. She is a sweet duck otherwise. I have her separated with the babies for her safety.

If anyone has any thoughts on this duck drama please let me know, thank you.

In the wild ducks form 1:1 bonds for mating season. The males at times will force other females to mate. These forced matings can be very ruff. In a domestic flock these forced mating happen with any female that is not an established mate of a drake. (A duck removed temporarily likely fits this description) The more females you have the more chances of hens not being established mates. Adding another drake may help alleviate hens not in bonded groups, but there is a chance of the drakes fighting or forced matings between groups.
I just realized you already are growing out more hens. You can see how it goes. Hopefully he will settle with the hens and be satisfied with those that choose him.

Thank you. Do you think he's hurting her because he sees her as a threat to the flock? I just want them to be happy.
