Can a hawk carry off a 4lb hen?

We've had Red Tailed Hawks go after our full grown big fat Brahmas but so far they've always missed. Our neighbors have had hawks attack their full grown chickens and the chicken has ended up decapitated because of the weight. We keep ours in a covered run now.

Sorry to hear that! You are right-- hawks will often kill prey much larger than themselves, but they can't carry it off whole. They will eat as much as they can on the ground.
