Chickerdoodle13- I just googled apple snail and they are huge! How big were yours? The two snails I had were only about the size of a quarter. Also, did you ever have to feed your snails wafers from the pet store? When I had mine, the people at the pet store told me to feed them these special snail wafers. I did. But it seemed like the fish ate them before the snails even had a chance!

Thanks everyone for your input!

They can get pretty big if you care for them properly. Mine met an unfortunate demise when I went away for Easter break and the power in my apartment went out. It got down to freezing and they were without a filter and heat for several days! I came back to dead snails

My cousins had one that got to be about the size of a golf ball. That's about as big as I've seen them get, but apparently they can get a bit bigger. In a 50 gallon tank, you should not have a problem. I would suggest just getting one though. That way you don't end up with a pair by mistake and end up with a million baby snails that are too cute to squish! Also, they can be messy because all they do is eat, but with a proper filter and regular water changes in your tank, you should not have a problem.

It may take some trial and error, but they will eat the excess fish food that falls to the bottom. You'll just have to find out how much to feed without leaving too much extra. You can also feed them veggies like lettuce and cucmbers. You can buy the wafers, and I gave mine occasionally as a treat, but they do fine on goldfish food. Goldfish are pretty much herbivores and so are apple snails...well, for the most part. They will snack on dead fish.

I decided to go with a snail. I will post a pic in a little bit. Right now I am letting it adjust to the right temp. I dont want to shock it so it is still in the bag I got it in and I am letting the bag float on the surface of the water for a little while. This is what I do with fish when I first get them. And I figured I'd rather be safe then sorry so I decided I'd do it with the snail too. I only got one like Chickerdoodle13 mentioned because I certainly don't want my tank to be over populated with little snails and there is no way I could kill them. I will post pics soon! Thanks guys!

Here are some pics of my new snail. Her name is Olive

She is doing a great job so far, I am very pleased with her. If only she could clean the house

We have trapdoor snails in our pond with goldfish and they do a great job cleaning it. The place we bought them from said they can get pretty big if given enough room, but ours are only about 2 inches. We bought 4 and they cleaned the pond in a couple weeks.
