can a "teenager" live alone for a bit?

I have two 5week old chicks, and it appears one is a rooster that I cannot keep. Luckily I have friends with land who need a rooster. I'm getting another pullet in early July. Is it too early to separate my two and ship the roo to the farm? Will the little girl be lonely? They are pretty much side by side all the time.

I'm also planning on moving them out to their coop and run soon, and wondered if that made a difference on when to separate.

Personally I would not separate them. She will probably look for him and she might get stressed.. that is my opinion though! Chickens usually go nuts when they can’t find one another!

I will have to separate them, as I can't keep "him". I guess you're saying wait until the new pullet arrives?

I would wait until you get the new one or send them both packing to your friends house if they will let you have the one back in July. I think she’d be very depressed alone.

We kept a rooster for a while after he started crowing by putting him away in a dark crate at night. Are you worried about bothering your neighbors? I would keep the cockerel until the other pullet arrives but I'm a softy
