Can anyone help me get started showing chickens?

Hello! I have been raising chickens for awhile now. Just for eggs so far but I'm going to be ordering my first batch of CX pretty soon. However everyone keeps telling me I should try showing chickens! I am decently close to a big state fair here. I am looking into local 4-H places I can join and maybe show them at the fair through that. Does anyone know anything about showing chickens? Logistics? Breeding? Breed standards? Training? Also if anyone is very close around me do you know specifically about the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe? Also what breeds you may suggest for a beginner. I hear its best to start with bantams and monochromes but idk. This would just be for fun so I want to work on chickens I really like. I have been thinking Silver Laced Wyandottes. They are common enough around here and I really like them. Anyways, thank you and any insight helps!

Try locating and attending a fair, and look at all the breeds exhibited. Locate someone who does well, and try to get brood stock from them and ask if they will mentor you. Also try to locate and join a local poultry club. Good luck, and start with the best birds available.

Thank you! Thats a great idea! I just found a nearby poultry club so that works perfectly. And I know my local breeder has an extra faverolles rooster just wandering around that he's been trying to sell. I think I might start with faverolles.

Go to poultry show central. They have a list of poultry shows. You will want to get with experienced breeders that show birds. Don't get birds from a hatchery, they will never win in a show, except maybe a 4H show. You will want to buy from breeders that show and do well at shows. I just published a book on Modern Game Bantams. I have a chapter on how to get into showing. You can see more on my facebook page "Modern Game Bantam Publication." Hope this helps.
