Can anyone help me identify this Hawk/Falcon?

Young red tailed hawk is my vote too. The crows here are a lot bigger then our red tailed hawks. The hawks stay clear of the crow crowds.

I put CDs in my trees once and the birds sat and swayed on them then ate our fruit.

We have a pair of red tailed hawks that live down the street and they come to our pond and drink and get moss out of it for there nests. Probably an occasional fish or snail too.

Juvenile Red-Tailed.

We've had one hanging around here all summer that dives at my head while I am milking my goats. He ignores the chickens though, but he keeps attempting to steal 100+ pound adult goats lol...silly bird.

Not that it's needed, 'cause you've had lots of help, but I say red-tail also. We have a breeding pair in the woods behind our house. Beautiful birds. Cover your chickies! Those guys are smart and huge. Some can have a 5' wingspan.

I have a pair of those guys, too! One took a three month old pullet a while back:( They do have that distinctive, piercing call...

Looks like one that I ran across eating one of my baby polish chickens. They usually start with a break of the neck and then they start to eat the head and neck area first. Plucking lots of feathers out.

Then they proceed to the the upper body and if they are uninterrupted, they eat the breast and then the guts (leaving the in-trials).

they are a protected species and you can't harm them.. i have a pair here all the time .. they catch mice in the farmers field next door. i know they are just waiting for a time when i am free ranging..if is see them flying in the valley below us then chickens are in.. if they aren't around then we free range for a few then right back into the run

Passage Red Tail Hawk -

Where do you live? It could be a young rough legged hawk, but it's head isn't quite wide enough - either way the result will be the same, especially this time of year when they are getting a bit desperate - I'd recommend screening the top of your coop. (the CD idea is great too, but if a raptor is hungry enough, they'll soon sort that out)

Good Luck!!

That is a red tail hawk. The young ones are the killers. I lost 2 pullets last yr to a young male. I have 2 huge adults that fly over my girls twice a day in their fly over pattern. They could get them any time they want but never bother them. They have 6' ft wing spans. I have read that if you have an adult raptor unless they get really hungry won't mess with grown chickens may even ward off some other flying predators. I am no expert but so far the grown ones don't bother my girls.
