My sweet 8 year old daughter has been very passionate about chickens since her first grade class hatched chickens last spring. we recently bought a new home and the chickens/coop that came with it. She hatched her own eggs from a local farm with various breeds... here are the two that hatched. I know one came from a bluish/green colored egg it is the grey chicken, the other chicken (black and white) i dont remember the color. It started off looking very similar to a brown hawk in the first few days and now black and white.... we dont know how to tell if these are male or female. any help would be appriciated. my daughter is a special needs child who again adores chickens, collecting eggs. we are trying to make this a positive experience for her and not quite sure what we are doing and hoping with assistance and guidance we will learn. sorry for the quality of the photos

I am horrible with trying to determine sex at this age, but I do want to say,

I am not 100% sure either as I am not that good with breeds I have not raised myself. How old are these birds? The lower one, and although the comb is coming in red, the feathering looks like a pullet. The legs are thin as well. As for the first one, looks like it has a lot of hackle type feathers, although it is hard to see in the picture. This one could be a cockerel. There will be others stop by here to welcome you to BYC. They may be able to give you better advice than I have! But if you can't wait that long, LOL, you can post these pics in the What Breed and Gender section of BYC for some possible ID...

Good luck with your babies and enjoy BYC!

You need to give it a little time about 3 to 6 weeks and some color to
come in and all your answers will start to come to life and every one will
be able to tell you exactly what you have ......

Thanks everyone. They are about 6-7 weeks now I guess patience is the key.:D

I have no idea what the breeds of these healthy chickens are but the black and white definitely looks like a rooster to me and the gray one looks like a hen! good luck and welcome again :D
